The Francis Howell North student news website FHNtoday.com has been designated a “Distinguished Site” by Student Newspapers Online (SNO). SNO awards honor excellence in all aspects of online journalism, from relevant and timely coverage to high-quality website design. FHNtoday.com was the only website in Missouri to receive this honor.

“It’s a really great tribute to the work that the students have done this year,” said Director of Student Media Aaron Manfull. “They’ve consistently created some great work and it’s the earliest the staff has ever earned the distinction during the school year.”

Madison Abanathie, FHNtoday Managing Editor, was in charge of organizing the entry that earned FHNtoday the Distinguished Site status. Although the submission period didn’t open until November, Abanathie and her team began looking at previous submissions and requirements in August to get a head start on the process.

FHN EIC Taylor Sheridan“I was so excited,” Abanathie said. “The last three years we’ve finished this in April. One of our biggest goals going into this year was to get it done at least a month early. I was in complete and total shock once I saw that we had gotten the final badge.”

To become an SNO Distinguished Site, schools must meet the criteria of six different badges, ranging from site design to audience engagement. One of the badges recognizes excellence in journalistic writing. FHNtoday has had more than a dozen different stories selected for the Best of SNO this year. Seniors Joel Boenitz, Kylah Woods, Madison Abanathie, Claire Huss, Sarah Zimmerman, Hannah Wilson, Sammie Herr, and Heeral Patel have been featured on the site this year. A few juniors also received the honor, including Allison Cavato, Leann Smyth, Michael Zull, and Gracie Bowman.

FHNtoday was also announced as a 2018 Online Pacemaker Finalist earlier this year. The National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) sponsors the award to recognize excellence in design and writing. Pacemaker winners are announced in April at the NSPA spring convention in Anaheim, Ca.
