A+ Tutoring Information

What is the A+ tutoring/mentoring requirement?
The A+ Schools Program requires all A+ students to complete 50 hours of unpaid tutoring/mentoring of other students.  All A+ tutoring opportunities must be arranged and coordinated through the FHN A+ Coordinator, must take place on district property, and must be supervised by a district employee.  Volunteer and/or community service experiences not affiliated with the Francis Howell School District may not be counted toward the A+ tutoring requirement.

What are my tutoring/mentoring options?
The Francis Howell School District offers A+ tutoring opportunities at the elementary, middle, and high school level.  These opportunities are available after school and during Fall, Spring, and Summer Breaks.

After school opportunities include assisting in an elementary classroom until 4:05, or assisting at an elementary Vacation Station program from 4:00-6:00.  Our cooperating elementary schools include Becky David, Harvest Ridge, and Henderson.

In addition to after school opportunities, students may also elect to earn their hours at an elementary Vacation Station program during Fall Break, Spring Break, or Summer Break.  During these breaks, the Vacation Station program is open all day and offers A+ students the opportunity to work full-time and earn their hours in a relatively short amount of time.  This option is helpful for those students whose extracurricular activities and obligations make it difficult to participate in after school A+ tutoring.

There are a limited number of high school A+ tutoring opportunities, including Success Leaders, Knight Mentors, and Junior Knights camps and clinics.  Please contact the FHN A+ Coordinator for more information if you participate in one of these special programs.

Please note that students are required to complete all 50 hours during the semester that they begin working toward their hours.  New A+ assignments are made each Fall, Spring, and Summer.

How do I sign up for A+ tutoring/mentoring?
Students may begin working on the 50-hour A+ tutoring/mentoring requirement as early as the summer after 10th grade.  Each semester, the FHN A+ Coordinator hosts an A+ Tutor Information & Training meeting.  Attendance at this meeting is required for any student requesting an A+ tutoring assignment.  The 2014-15 A+ Tutor meeting dates are as follows, and all meetings will be from 2:30-3:15 in the FHN Auditorium:

August 17th for Fall 2015 A+ Tutors
November 16th for Spring 2016 A+ Tutors
April 11th for Summer 2016 A+ Tutors

What if I cannot attend the A+ Tutor meeting?
Students who cannot attend the mandatory A+ Tutor Information & Training meeting may complete an online information/training session.  Click here for more information.
