FHN Celebrates Third Annual Academic Signing Night

With all the attention given to high school seniors who receive athletic scholarships and sign a NCAA letter of intent, Francis Howell North (FHN) High School wants to make sure the community also celebrates the students who received academic scholarships from four-year institutions. On April 12, 2017, FHN hosted their third annual Academic Signing Night, an evening to applaud the students that have spent many long hours studying and preparing, and to give these students the kind of appreciation and send-off they deserve.

“I am so proud of our students,” said FHN Principal Andy Downs, “and I am impressed with they have accomplished thus far in their academic journey.”

What they have accomplished is considerable. Lisa Woodrum, the FHN Counseling Department Chair, is one of those behind this event – a very special evening for her and FHN. “Counselors want to recognize our academic champions!” she said. “We have so many talented students earning academic scholarships, and they should be celebrated for their four years of hard work.”

Those late nights buried in a book, or fingers frantically flexing to finish a paper for an Advanced Placement (AP) class were not without frustrations. But the great results are not without just rewards. Woodrum said, “Our school’s 2017 Academic Signing seniors will be earning over $758,000 in academic scholarships.”

As we marvel at these students’ university scholarships, it should serve as a reminder how far a student can go with perseverance and hard work. Downs said, “They have realized the fruits of hard work, and I cannot wait to see what they accomplish in the future at their chosen institution.” Nor can the FHSD community.
