National Signing Day at Francis Howell North

Posted on 02/02/2017

Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2017, is National Signing Day, the first day that a high school senior can sign a binding National Letter of Intent (NLI) to play NCAA football. In the Francis Howell School District (FHSD), it is a day to honor the student-athletes in all sports as they prepare for the next step in their academic and athletic careers. Signing a NLI is all about commitment – the future commitment to play a sport at the collegiate level, as well as the past commitment that has provided this opportunity for high school students.

At Francis Howell North (FHN), ten students have signed their college letter of commitment, including three NCAA Division I schools. The students who signed have a cumulative 3.48 GPA.

For both parents and students, it’s a culmination of long days and nights, studying and practicing in order to make it to the collegiate level. Today’s signing is another step toward that goal.

“It’s a lot of stress off both of us,” said James Murphy, the father of FHN’s Softball star Allison Murphy. “We’ve been going back and forth (looking at colleges) for a year now, to finally get it done is a pretty good feeling.” And he got to see her formally sign on the dotted line in-person. “It was really nice that the school put this on for the kids.”

Allison Murphy will be sharing her talents with Jefferson County Community College, part of the NJCAA Division I. Her signature on a piece of paper seemed to give validity to her diligence and persistence. Murphy said, “I feel like all my hard work paid off, and my dad’s really proud of me, so it’s a good feeling. Today gave me a lot more appreciation for my parents and coaches. To see them all so proud of me feels great. For them to help me work my way up here, it’s pretty awesome.”

Among the outstanding student-athletes signing from FHN, State Diving Champion and Missouri Diver of the Year Peter Lucido will be attending the University of Missouri-Columbia. “I’m really excited to go to Mizzou,” Lucido said. “The coach there is really great. It’ll be nice being close to home, but far enough away.” And he’ll miss his days of walking the halls of FHN. “It’s been a good trip,” he said. “It’s a great school.”

Congratulations to all of the FHN students who will be competing next year at the college level. Click here to see a picture gallery of all three FHSD high schools’ ceremonies.
